What is a Strike Team?
A strike team is a team of individuals who participate in "on the ground" efforts to combat invasive species. The HIP Strike Team is a group led by experienced & certified volunteers who provide technical support and labor to remove invasive species at partner sites. These are typically public use sites such as parks, schools, land trusts, nature reserves, etc. The team also may work on other sites when deemed appropriate. We will host several events during a calendar year.
The Strike Team differs from Weed Wrangle efforts. Though similar in format to Weed Wrangles, Strike Team events typically involve a more rigorous hands on approach to invasive control. While both types of events demonstrate the benefits of consistent management over time, Weed Wrangles focus primarily on engaging the public and promoting awareness. Weed Wrangles introduce the public to community based invasive species control with the focus on public outreach, education, recruitment. For most Weed Wrangles, anyone can participate, including children, and training is often hands-on. Participants may have little or no plant ID experience.
Strike team members don't need to have experience or expertise managing invasives. Strike team members will have on the ground training from the more experienced members of HIP, and will be directed to other training resources as needed.
